Institute for Neurofunctional Psychology - INP
Advancing Trauma-Informed Care Across the Lifespan

The Institute for Neurofunctional Psychology (INP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming mental health through the science of the nervous system, trauma-informed care, and integrative relational healing. We unite neuroscience, depth psychology, functional nutrition, human development and longevity science to create a whole-system approach to healing and resilience across the lifespan.
Our work recognizes that emotional and physical health are inseparable. The brain, the heart, and the gut—our three integrated neural networks shaping how we think, feel, relate, and heal.
INP offers a new, evidence-based integrative paradigm for understanding trauma and and supporting health.

What Is Neurofunctional Psychology?
A new paradigm for understanding how trauma and nervous system dysregulation shape development, mental health, parenting, relationships, overall health and aging. For decades, psychology has been fragmented—separating mind from body, trauma from behavior, and symptoms from root causes. At the same time, society now faces a silent epidemic of nervous system dysregulation: burnout, anxiety, chronic illness, emotional reactivity, fractured families, and rising loneliness.
Neurofunctional Psychology bridges this gap.
It integrates:
-
Trauma and stress neuroscience
-
Polyvagal-informed nervous system regulation
-
Depth psychology and the unconscious
-
Developmental and lifespan psychology
-
Functional nutrition and gut–brain science
-
Epigenetics & inflammation research
-
Attachment and relational systems
-
Intergenerational trauma
-
Mind–body integration & longevity science
-
Cultural, societal, and systemic trauma
This model connects modern neuroscience with the lived experience of suffering—helping people understand why patterns such as dysregulation, illness, burnout, addiction, relational distress, or anxiety develop, and how they can change. For decades, psychology has been fragmented — separating mind from body, trauma from behavior, and symptoms from root causes.
The world is facing a silent epidemic of nervous system dysregulation: burnout, disconnection, anxiety, chronic illness, fractured families, and rising loneliness.

Neurofunctional Psycholog bridges the gap. It integrates trauma science, nervous system regulation, developmental psychology, functional nutrition, stress physiology, attachment, and longevity research to create a whole-system paradigm of healing across the lifespan.
We believe:
Connection is biology
Regulation is resilience
Healing begins with education
And where there is life, there is hope

INP bridges the gap between modern neuroscience and the lived experience of suffering—helping individuals understand why dysregulation, illness, burnout, addiction, reactivity, or relational patterns develop, and how they can shift.
This model bridges the gap between modern neuroscience and the lived experience of suffering—helping individuals understand why patterns such as dysregulation, illness, burnout, addiction, relationship instability, and emotional reactivity occur, and how they can change.
We bridge the gap between modern neuroscience and real human suffering.

Why This Work Matters Now

Trauma across childhoods, families, communities, and cultures is one of the most significant unaddressed public health challenges of our time.
It affects:

-
the body, immune function, and inflammation
-
the nervous system and stress response
-
mood, attention, and behavior
-
relationships and attachment
-
long-term health and aging
When individuals understand the root causes of their patterns, not as failures, but as once adaptive nervous system responses, through awareness they gain the power to heal, reconnect, and thrive.
And when they view others through that same lens, compassion, kindness and peace becomes the alchemy of trauma. Healing the nervous system changes the trajectory of families, communities, and future generations.

When we heal ourselves, we heal the world.

Dr. Bernadette Violetta Di Toro
Founder & Director
Clinical Psychologist & Gerontologist
Dr. Bernadette V. Di Toro is the Founder and Executive Director of INP — the Institute for Neurofunctional Psychology and the Founder of Alchemy by the Sea. A clinical psychologist, gerontologist, and functional nutrition therapist, she integrates trauma-informed neuroscience with the emerging science of the “three brains”: the head, heart, and gut. Her work unites nervous system regulation, developmental psychology, attachment, and functional nutrition to advance a holistic model of psychological resilience and longevity.
